Water Play: Cooking

A great activity in this sunny weather is 'cooking' in a water tray (or storage box).  The children are able to use their imagination to make all sorts of 'food', develop their fine motor skills through pouring and mixing and have the opportunity to use mathematical language relating to capacity.

You will need:
  • Water tray (or storage box)
  • Cooking utensils
  • Bowls
  • Anything extra you can find! I have added string, dried beans, flowers and leaves.
  • Food colouring or different scents if you have any.

Communication and Language:
  • Uses talk to connect ideas, explain what is happening and anticipate what might happen next, recall and relive past experiences.
  • Uses talk in pretending that objects stand for something else in play, eg. "this box is my castle".

Physical Development:
  • Uses one handed tools and equipment, eg. makes snips in paper with child scissors.

Expressive Arts and Design:
  • Beginning to be interested in and describe the texture of things.
  • Realises tools can be used for a purpose.
  • Engages in imaginative role-play based on their own first-hand experiences.
